Details

I designed an interactive installation concept during a 6-month internship at MST Hospital’s Innovation Lab. The installation showcases healthcare innovation using physical exhibits and models animated inside a Voxon VX2 holographic display. It serves as a modular and accessible concept for use in public hospital space.

Problem

MST Hospital lacked a dedicated space to showcase its ongoing healthcare innovations, making it difficult for staff, visitors, and stakeholders to stay informed. To address this, the Innovation Lab aimed to create a physical installation that could present new technologies in a professional and engaging way. A specific section of the hospital hallway was set aside to be transformed into a permanent exhibition space.

Requirements

It was determained through interview with stakeholders and client to focus on several requirements for the installation:

  1. Modular structure to allow updates and expansions

  2. Visually engaging and easy to understand for all visitors

  3. Professional appearance suitable for the hospital

  4. Feasible within time and budget constraints

  5. Use of innovative technologies to highlight nature of the Innovation Lab

  6. Fit within hospital safety and accessibility standards

My Contributions

I acted as the project lead, managing communication between MST Hospital and a small project team consisting of an artist and an engineer.

My contributions included:

  • Planning and managing tasks across the project timeline

  • Conducting stakeholder interviews to align with user needs and hospital standards

  • Researching materials and components suitable for a healthcare environment

  • Leading the design and development of two prototypes:

    • A physical prototype to test form, modularity, and feasibility

    • A VR prototype (built in Unity) to help stakeholders visualize the installation at full scale

  • Coordinating the construction of the proof-of-concept

  • Preparing design and technical documentation for client hand-off

  • Delivering the project on time and fulfilling all core requirements

Results

The client validated both prototypes and ordered a Voxon VX2 unit for future use. The project received internal support and funding to continue development. The hospital is now moving forward with building the full installation based on the work delivered during the internship.
