University Project, 2021
Board Game Design - Role Mechanics - Playtesting - Game Balancing - Rules - Prototyping
Details
A university group project focused on designing a physical board game. I joined as a game designer and worked closely with engineers, artists, and fellow designers to develop a complete playable prototype, including a printed rulebook, game board, cards, and tokens.
Problem
The theme of the course was to create a board game from scratch. The challenge was to design a fun, replayable, and balanced game that could be physically prototyped and tested.
Requirements
Create original and balanced gameplay mechanics
Design a physical map and player interaction system
Use team-generated visual assets in the final design
Deliver a fully playable physical prototype
Include printed rulebook, cards, and game pieces
My Contributions
Created the core ruleset and balancing the game for fair play
Designing the map layout and integrating it with player movement and actions
Designing and testing a set of action and ability cards
Coordinating playtests and making adjustments based on feedback
Aligning gameplay with the visual assets created by artists
Results
The final deliverable was a complete board game prototype titled Ancient Escape, where Adventurers must escape an ancient temple while being hunted by Monsters. The game included printed components, a detailed rulebook, and balanced mechanics tested through multiple play sessions. The team succeeded in creating a fun, competitive experience that encouraged strategic thinking and player interaction.
